Prego – The place to go in Ponsonby
Prego is like a big warm hug from someone you love, you walk in and you never want to leave. For over thirty years Prego has been serving consistently delicious dishes alongside some of the best service in town and a wine list packed with your favourite brands and some exciting new wines to try.
Check out the special wine list that has some older vintages just begging to be consumed. Side note, they also make a mean Bloody Mary that will set you right like nothing else can.
The first time I entered Prego I was nineteen years old and looking for a job in hospitality, I decided to walk down Ponsonby Road and drop off my CV to a few places. Krishna was there, she handed me a huge training manual and said you will need to learn all of this, I remember being a bit scared of her and that book and took a job two doors down at Estasi. One of the only regrets of my professional life is that I didn’t work at Prego!
The menu is full of dishes that are so loved they can never ever be removed, but if you’re a Prego novice let me tell you my favourites. The Crispy Squid is tender and crunchy in all the right ways, you will get one to share and then wish you weren’t sharing it.
I love Caprese Salad and this one is superb, the tomatoes are perfectly ripe and the ratio of tomato to mozzarella to basil and olive oil is spot on. The Prego Pie is a must have for a hearty meal, some claim the pie is the best part of Auckland winter. What about when your craving a slice and a glass of red? They have that covered too!
My children have just graduated from the kids menu to the main menu and order the Fettucine Alfredo every time, which is great because it’s delicious and I can steal some for myself. Oh, and make sure you save room for dessert, the Tiramisu is killer.
