Saint Clair Pioneer Block 17 ‘Plateau’ Merlot 2013

Taste & Other Notes

Made from fruit grown in the Gimblett Gravels region in Hawke’s Bay the intense black plum colour and layered aromas that are packed with ripe black berry fruit characters and softly spiced plum notes hint at the delights the flavours have to offer. With a rich palate weight that is balanced by some fresh acidity in the finish and soft tannins that carry the rich fruit and dark chocolate flavours this is perfect with roast beef. 4 stars from me.

Tried this again the next day and the extra time exposed to air encouraged the wine to come alive. Beautiful rich mocha characters appear and softened acidity in the finish means that to enjoy this wine at its best you need to either give this wine two or three years in the cellar or decant it to consume now. Increases my rating to 4.5 stars.
