Double Trophy Announcement for Saint Clair Family Estate

The Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards 2019 have awarded Saint Clair James Sinclair Cabernet Merlot 2018 the Champion Red Blend Trophy. At the same time the International Wine and Spirits Challenge (IWSC) 2019 held in London announced the Saint Clair Barrique Sauvignon Blanc 2016 has won the trophy for the Best Sauvignon Blanc. This is one of the highest awards presented by this esteemed wine show.

The IWSC sets the international benchmark for quality. For half a century the International Wine & Spirit Competition has been recognising and rewarding the very best wines and spirits in the world. Winning the esteemed Sauvignon Blanc trophy at such a recognised world wine competition is an amazing achievement from the family owned winery Saint Clair.

The Saint Clair Barrique Sauvignon Blanc 2016 is a barrel fermented style Sauvignon Blanc. During its time aging in seasoned oak barriques the individual barrels were tasted regularly by the winemaking team. After 11 months aging, only the very best and most interesting barrels were selected to formulate the final blend. The resulting wine is complex and rich with savoury layers of toasted hazelnut, papaya and nectarine with hints of berry and cassis.

The entire Saint Clair team have a strong focus on quality, from the vineyards to the winemaking and beyond. These two trophies further endorse this quality focus acknowledging both these wines as being the best of the best.

Saint Clair is renowned for award success and the company is incredibly proud of the winery’s consistent achievements through international wine shows. Neal Ibbotson (Managing Director) comments, “To have our wines being recognised as some of the best of the world in such esteemed international wine shows is overwhelming. We feel fortunate to have such exceptional vineyard sites and work with an outstanding team of highly skilled people with the ability to create world class wines of excellence”.

A strong team approach to consistently produce wines of quality has lead Saint Clair Family Estate to being one of New Zealand’s most awarded wineries.

I have been writing a regular wine column for The Nelson Mail newspaper since 2000.

Unfortunately the column space is not big enough to include my thoughts on all of the many wines I taste. Hopefully this blog will fix that. It also gives me somewhere to archive the many columns I write. I will also include some favourite recipes from my dearly beloved who loves cooking and of course because wine and food simply go together. I will also point you in the direction of upcoming events and websites I think are great. Enjoy, Neil
